We greatly appreciate the visibility he continues to bring to the work of the Monuments Men and Women Foundation (@monumentsmenandwomenfnd) and the Forever Promise Project, which connects American families of the fallen with the Dutch adopters of their loved ones buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery.

Greg’s story about the Forever Promise Project, which we previously shared would air several weeks ago, was postponed due to severe weather and breaking news — but it is now scheduled to air tonight. We look forward to sharing the link with you as soon as it becomes available.

In the meantime, Greg shared this photo from an event he attended last night, where two extraordinary American heroes were present: 101-year-old Dan Dorchak, a B-24 bombardier who flew 50 missions over China during World War II, and Paul Galanti, a Navy pilot who endured seven years as a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton. Both men, whom Greg has featured in past stories, received rousing standing ovations from the 225 people in attendance, a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the Greatest Generation that continues to inspire us all.

Moments like these remind us that the mission of remembrance is not only about honoring the fallen, but also about recognizing the living witnesses to history, and ensuring their stories and the sacrifices of their generation, are never forgotten.

It’s hard to believe it has been twelve years since The Monuments Men premiered in New York City and around the world, bringing to the screen the remarkable true story of the men and women who risked everything to protect and recover civilization’s greatest treasures during World War II.

Film has a unique power to illuminate history, to reach hearts in ways books alone sometimes cannot, and to draw the world’s attention through storytelling that feels larger than life. Through that lens, the mission of the Monuments Men, their sacrifice, and their courage, found a global audience.

I am grateful to all who helped bring their story to the big screen, ensuring these heroes finally received the recognition they deserved.

I remain committed to honoring their legacy and helping to complete the mission they began.

I’m proud to share that REMEMBER US narrator Dion Graham has been nominated for Best Non-Fiction Narrator by the Audiobooks Publishers Association’s Audie Awards!

He’s one of the most celebrated narrators in the field today—often referred to as the GOAT— and after hearing his work, it’s easy to understand why. Dion gave voice to these stories with such care, empathy, and humanity.

He’s also the one who suggested that I narrate the epilogue myself. It wasn’t something I had originally planned, but it became one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had as a writer.

I will always be grateful to Dion for lending his voice to tell these stories, and I’ll be cheering for him on March 2. Congratulations, Dion!

One of those lunches you don’t forget!

Last week in Margraten, I had the chance to spend time with Jenneke Michiels van Kessenich, Emilie’s daughter. She’s nearly 94 and walked in on her own — sharp, engaged, and full of stories.

Sitting across from her, history didn’t feel distant at all. Emilie’s courage was right there in the room, living on in the stories she passed down. These connections are at the heart of Remember Us and the Forever Promise Project.

At the Netherlands American Cemetery, one purpose guides everything: honoring the 10,000 American men and four women who gave their lives so that people they never knew might live in freedom.

In November, two panels containing errors of fact and omission that needed correcting were removed from the Netherlands American Cemetery visitor center. Last week, the American Battle Monuments Commission (@usabmc), the federal agency responsible for managing our nation’s overseas cemeteries, installed a new panel that corrects the historical record while fully crediting those who deserved recognition all along.

It was an honor to stand alongside U.S. Ambassador Joe Popolo (@u.s.embassythehague) to unveil the new panel for the Netherlands American Cemetery Visitor Center and discuss the history of the cemetery and the Monuments Men and Women Foundation (@monumentsmenandwomenfnd)’s Forever Promise Project.

Ambassador Popolo promised the people of Limburg that a new panel with factually correct information would be forthcoming – and he delivered. He also expressed his full support of our ongoing efforts to connect American families with the Dutch adopters of their loved ones who are forever remembered at the Netherlands American Cemetery.

Today, Monuments Man Harry Ettlinger would have turned 100.

Making it to 100 was Harry’s personal mission. His doctor encouraged him to try, and Harry took that advice very seriously! In the course of my work honoring these heroes of civilization, I have known 21 Monuments Men and Women. I was closest to Harry.

Harry and I traveled together, retracing the path he took as a young soldier. We attended ceremonies together, where Harry quickly and consistently became the star of the show, even when we were standing alongside some of the biggest stars in the world.

We mourned together as we visited the grave of Walter Huchthausen at the Netherlands American Cemetery, one of only two Monuments Men killed in action during World War II. And we celebrated together—at the White House, in the halls of Congress, and at movie premieres here and abroad—as world leaders and the public embraced the legacy of the Monuments Men and Women.

Somewhere along the way, Harry became part of my family and someone I deeply admired and respected. He was born the same year as my father, which added a special layer of connection to our friendship and made our conversations feel even more personal. Although their early lives and childhoods could not have been more different, they were shaped by the same defining moment in history. Their lives marked by service, resilience, and a deep love of country.

Harry will forever be an inspiration to the many people whose lives he touched. He once called me a “champion for the Monuments Men,” a responsibility I promise to honor by continuing the work he believed in so deeply.

SSgt. Frank Midkiff is one of the thousands of American heroes buried far from home at the Netherlands American Cemetery, but never forgotten. Frank served during World War II and lost his life when his B-17 crashed near Bremen, Germany.

Earlier this month, reporter Greg McQuade (@gregmcquadecbs6) - WTVR CBS 6 introduced Frank’s son, 82-year-old James Midkiff, to Marco Bastin, the man who lovingly cares for his father’s grave—connecting by Zoom from Virginia to Margraten.

James shared that meeting the man who watches over his father’s resting place is a moment he will cherish forever. This is exactly why this work matters.

Greg will be sharing this story tonight on WTVR CBS 6 News (@cbs6) for those who are local in the Richmond, VA area, and we’ll share the link later for everyone else.

It was a gift to step away from our routine for a few days to celebrate the New Year with no schedules, and no rush. It was just open space, big skies, a little wonder, and a lot of laughter (along with an impressive range of hats, from winter-ready to full West Texas cowboy 🤠).

Standing beneath these telescopes, you can’t help but feel both the scale of the universe and your own small place in it. I am grateful for these memories under the stars with my family, and looking forward to what’s next in 2026.

🎄Today, I find myself thinking about gratitude.

In 1944, Christmas cards like this one were sent from newly liberated Dutch families to the American soldiers they had welcomed into their homes—young men who had returned to the front lines, many facing an uncertain future.

Our Dutch partners at the Foundation for Adopting Graves at the American Cemetery Margraten recently shared this extraordinary card with me. Inside are words of gratitude for liberty regained, faith amid sacrifice, and hope that these soldiers would return home safely, carrying with them a fond remembrance of “Little Holland.”

Gratitude did not end with liberation. It became a lifelong commitment to honor the fallen and care for their memory. Eighty years later, that promise is still being kept.

This Christmas, I’m thinking of the boys who received cards like this—and of the families who never stopped remembering them. I’m also thinking of the men and women in uniform serving around the world today, away from home, and of a simple truth understood in 1944: being remembered matters.

May this holiday bring cherished memories and the hope of peace for all.

December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy and changed our world forever.

When I think about Pearl Harbor, I think about ordinary Americans, including my dad, who were suddenly called to do extraordinary things. That generation answered a call they never expected, and because of that, I’ve spent much of my life honoring their stories.

Today, we remember the lives lost at Pearl Harbor and all those who served in the days and years that followed. Their courage and sacrifice live on in the stories we tell and the freedoms we cherish.

Family time has a way of putting everything back in perspective, and I’m grateful for that.

What an unforgettable weekend at The National WWII Museum’s International Conference on World War II in New Orleans!

I always love sharing the stories behind Remember Us—the young Americans who never made it home and the Dutch families who have cared for their graves for eight decades, forging a bond that continues to this day.

I am inspired every day by the veterans and active service members I meet, whether at home or on the road, who protect our country and preserve our freedom.

Growing up with a father who served in World War II, I learned early the quiet bravery it takes to stand for something greater than oneself. Writing about and researching those who served—from the Monuments Men who risked everything to save art during WWII, to the soldiers buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery at Margraten—has only deepened my gratitude for their selflessness and sacrifice.

Today, we honor all veterans—and every day, we give thanks.

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps (@usnamarines )— 250 years of honor, courage, and commitment.

Those who have worn the uniform embody the spirit of “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” including my own dad — a Marine Corps veteran from the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma who served bravely in the Pacific at just 18 years old, fighting in Saipan and Okinawa. After the war, he attended college on the GI Bill and built a successful career in investment banking, but having worn the uniform of a United States Marine remained one of his proudest accomplishments to the end of his life.

To all who have served and continue to serve, thank you. Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸

“So far, over 300 families have asked to be put in touch with their adopters. And we’re just starting.”

When the Monuments Men and Women Foundation (@monumentsmenandwomenfnd) launched The Forever Promise Project, our goal was simple: to fulfill the original vision of the founders of the Margraten Grave Adoption Program — to connect American families with the Dutch citizens who have lovingly cared for the graves of their fallen loved ones since World War II.

Not long after ‘Remember Us’ was published, people began reaching out, hoping to make that connection. One of them was June West Brandt, who saw an op-ed I’d written in the Houston Chronicle. June was a young girl when her brother was killed in the war; his name is inscribed on the Walls of the Missing at the Netherlands American Cemetery. She had never heard of the grave adoption program, but wondered if someone in the Netherlands might be caring for her brother’s memory.

I immediately prioritized her message, and working with our Dutch partners at Stichting Adoptie Graven Amerikaanse Begraafplaats Margraten, we located her brother’s adopters within days and arranged a Zoom call so they could meet. A few weeks later, June’s daughter Allison traveled to Margraten, where I had the privilege of joining her as she met the adopters in person.

I’ve never thought of myself as an author, more a messenger and connector. To see these two families, once strangers, now forever connected, was a moment I will never forget. Knowing that the adopters’ young son will one day carry on the promise to honor June’s brother is exactly why we began this project.

My heartfelt thanks to our friend Jamie at the AP for so beautifully sharing June’s story. The visibility will help us connect more families, and fulfill the promise that began 80 years ago.

For 250 years, the U.S. Navy has protected our nation, our people, and the ideals of freedom across the globe. Its legacy is not only one of strength at sea, but also of service that safeguards the very values and heritage we fight to defend.

Among its proud veterans was Lt. Commander George Stout, a visionary leader who laid the groundwork for the Monuments Men’s mission. Stout enlisted in the U.S. Navy in early 1943, developing camouflage techniques for military aircraft before being transferred to the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program in June 1944. His leadership and innovation were instrumental in preserving the world’s cultural treasures during and after WWII.

Stout’s service reminds us that the fight for freedom also includes protecting the culture and history that define it.

⚓️ As the U.S. Navy marks its 250th year, thank you to all who have served for your courage, sacrifice, and dedication.

📚 On World Teachers’ Day, I find myself thinking back to my time at St. Mark’s School of Texas. It wasn’t just the academics that shaped me, but the teachers who challenged me to think more deeply, ask harder questions, and most importantly, sparked a lifelong passion for learning.

Those lessons, planted in a classroom decades ago, continue to guide my work today. I still treasure the opportunities to return and visit from time to time.

Teachers don’t just prepare students for tests; they prepare them for life. To all who dedicate themselves to this calling: thank you!

🎡 Texas-sized fried food? Check. A Cheetos Twinkie Smash Burger? Check plus. Losing at carnival games? Sometimes. The State Fair of Texas is truly one-of-a-kind, and I’ll never forget the thrill of going as a kid.

Experiencing it again this week with my own family made it even more special. Nothing beats the smiles and laughter, and the occasional “Dad, you’re too old for this ride” moment. (Spoiler: I went anyway!)

The last Sunday in September is designated as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, a day to honor those who have lost a loved one in service to our nation. No one has given more for our country than the families of the fallen. On this day, I find myself especially grateful for their courage.

On my visits to the Netherlands American Cemetery, I often think of the families who carry this loss every day. I’ve brought my young sons there as well, sharing the stories of the soldiers and the grief their families endure, so they can understand that it is their sacrifice that allows us to live in freedom.

While we cannot ease a family’s pain or repay the debt we owe them, we can honor their loved ones by sharing their stories and ensuring they are never forgotten. 🇺🇸

On this day in 2012, I had the extraordinary honor of standing on the steps of Neuschwanstein Castle during The National WWII Museum’s In the Footsteps of the Monuments Men tour. Beside me was Monuments Man Harry Ettlinger, who decades earlier had served under Capt. James Rorimer. Together, Harry and I tried to recreate the famous photo from the cover my book, The Monuments Men—this time with Harry standing in for his former boss. It remains one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Neuschwanstein was once a Nazi repository for thousands of works of looted art. Thanks to the courage and dedication of the Monuments Men, these cultural treasures were safeguarded and returned to their rightful owners. Today, it’s not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also a place that has captured imaginations around the world—even serving as the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Just the other day, my son Rodney reminded me of that moment when he pointed out the jigsaw puzzle of Neuschwanstein hanging in his room. It’s amazing how these stories keep connecting generations in unexpected ways!

🇺🇸 On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, let’s pause to remember those who endured unimaginable hardship as prisoners of war and those who never returned home.

Let’s also remember the families who continue to grieve at home, still hoping for news of their loved ones. Their courage, love, and unwavering faith are part of the story of sacrifice, just as much as the service of the men and women who never came home.

At the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, the Walls of the Missing bear the names of 1,722 soldiers and airmen whose fate is still unknown. Standing before the Walls on my recent visit was a powerful reminder that freedom is never without sacrifice. While there, I watched visitors celebrate the lives of these heroes, point out the names of their loved ones, and shed quiet tears in remembrance—whether they knew them personally or simply recognize the debt we all owe.

Behind every name is a story and it is up to us to keep those stories alive.

This past weekend, I had the honor of attending the Liberation Concert at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten. This year’s concert marked 81 years of freedom since the first U.S. liberators set foot on Dutch soil.

What began in November 1944 as a temporary cemetery for the Ninth U.S. Army is now the final resting place of 8,301 American service members. The cemetery also honors 1,722 missing soldiers and airmen whose names are inscribed on the Walls of the Missing.

It was especially meaningful to share this occasion with Emilie Michiels van Kessenich’s daughter, Jenneke. In 1946, Emilie traveled across the United States to visit the families of fallen American soldiers buried in Margraten, assuring them they would never be alone or forgotten. “Leave him with us and we will watch over him, forever, as if he was our own.”

Emilie helped launch the movement to adopt every grave at the cemetery. That promise continues today, thanks to our partners from the Stichting Adoptie Graven Amerikaanse Begraafplaats Margraten, who also joined us on this special anniversary.

Each September, the Liberation Concert pays tribute to the men and women who gave their lives for freedom. To stand among their headstones as music rose across the cemetery was a deeply moving reminder that the liberties we cherish today were secured through their sacrifice. 🇺🇸🇳🇱

This past week, the Monuments Men and Women Foundation (@monumentsmenandwomenfnd) once again demonstrated the power of vigilance, teamwork, and goodwill in protecting cultural treasures stolen during World War II.

Thanks to a tip received through our Art Leads program, our team was able to halt the sale of two 17th-century oil paintings attributed to Dutch master Ambrosius Bosschaert at an auction in Newark, Ohio.

Each discovery renews my hope that the many treasures still missing will one day return home. If you have information about cultural objects that may have been stolen during WWII, please reach out to us through our Art Leads program.

Together, we can write this final chapter of World War II history.

This morning I had the honor of speaking at the 106th The American Legion National Headquarters National Convention in Tampa!

What a privilege it was to be in a room filled with so many veterans who have served our nation. Listening to their stories and shaking their hands reminded me once again why their courage and sacrifice can never be forgotten.

I’ll be sharing my full remarks here in the days ahead, but for now I just want to say how humbled I am by this experience, and grateful for the opportunity to share the stories of those whose sacrifices shaped the freedoms we cherish today. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 I’m honored to share some exciting news!

Tomorrow morning, I’ll be speaking to more than 7,000 veterans at The American Legion (@theamericanlegion) National Conference in Tampa.

On the schedule, I’ll speak just before the Director of National Intelligence, and the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This gathering is one of the most significant annual events for America’s veterans, and it is an extraordinary privilege to join such a powerful program.

The chance to address thousands of veterans, their families, and supporters is one of the greatest honors of my career. Every time I meet veterans, I’m reminded of the bond of service that connects generations, and the importance of ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Weekends are best when surrounded by family (and it certainly doesn’t hurt when the view looks like this!).

After a busy spring, slowing down to enjoy the laughter and simple joys — and maybe a little friendly competition — before the school year and everyday routines start up again soon has been good for the soul.

I was honored to deliver the closing remarks during this important discussion about Ukraine’s cultural heritage. These treasures are part of our shared heritage, and it’s up to all of us to help safeguard them.

The Monuments Men showed us what’s possible when nations unite to protect culture in the face of destruction—a lesson that matters now more than ever.

The event was introduced by John E. Herbst, Senior Director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, and moderated by Deborah Lehr, President and Founder of the Antiquities Coalition.

Ambassador of Ukraine to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, emphasized the importance of international support in the fight for justice, truth, and the protection of Ukrainian cultural heritage from destruction and theft.

Years ago, as I walked across the Ponte Vecchio in Florence—the only bridge the Nazis didn’t destroy when they fled the city in 1944—I found myself asking a question that changed my life: How did this extraordinary city—and so much of Europe’s cultural heritage—survive the devastation of World War II?

Who were the people who saved it?

That question led to the journey of a lifetime: discovering the story of the Monuments Men and Women—the unlikely heroes who risked everything to protect, recover, and return some of the world’s greatest cultural treasures.

So much has happened since that day. Books. A film. A foundation that carries their legacy forward. But most meaningful of all—friendships with several Monuments Men and Women who are no longer with us, and with their families, who’ve entrusted me with their stories and helped ensure they’ll never be forgotten.

Sharing this view—and this memory—with my boys reminds me why I started, and why this work still matters.

History lives when we pass it on.

Most everywhere you travel in Italy, especially in smaller towns, you’ll find a monument like this one I photographed in Matera—honoring and remembering the local sons who never came home from the Great War.

A century has passed since the end of WWI, yet the memory of those who sacrificed everything remains alive and never forgotten.

Many times, the joy of travel lies in the simplest moments, like finding a newborn kitten tucked behind an old wooden door on a quiet stone street.

For a year, we searched for the identities of the American paratrooper and two Dutch children on the cover of REMEMBER US. Thanks to incredible researchers in the Netherlands, we now know their names—and the deeper story behind the image.
